Stitching Community Together: Meet the Broad Street Menders

A torn jacket. A broken zipper. A missing button. For many of our guests, these aren’t small inconveniences—they’re challenges to security and safety. That’s where the Broad Street Menders come in.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, a group of skilled volunteers sets up sewing machines, thread, and supplies alongside the mending log, where they record the items and repairs they’ll make that day. They’re highly efficient and organized, and behind that structure are hearts committed to Radical Hospitality.

“We try to be people of ‘yes,’ ” says Helen Cunningham-Newbold, one of the group’s leaders. Like all the partners offering services in Broad Street Love’s space, the Menders bring a culture of abundance. Whether fixing zippers, adding Velcro, or tailoring an outfit for a job interview, they meet each guest with warmth and respect, inviting them into the process by offering choices that center their goals for the garment.

And their impact stretches beyond Broad Street Love. The Menders also bring their craft to the Hub of Hope (operated by Project HOME) and Face to Face in Germantown, extending dignity and care throughout Philadelphia.

responding to needs

For some guests, the need goes beyond simple function. Some of the garments that come to the Menders are prized possessions: ties to family or a former life, mementos of special occasions, or representations of personal and cultural identity. For others, it’s a matter of safety and dignity. Clothing in disrepair can lead to judgment, unwanted attention, or even interactions with law enforcement. That’s why Broad Street Love partners with the Menders and maintains an on-site clothing boutique—so everyone can feel secure, respected, and cared for.

As summer fades and the school year begins, the needs of our community shift. Warm layers and backpacks are especially critical right now. Backpacks aren’t just for students—they’re a lifeline for carrying belongings safely and securely.

Just as a single stitch can repair a tear, your generosity helps hold our community together.
