Meet CHRIS
Chris Haddad joined Broad Street Love this summer through the Bridging the Gaps internship program, which connects health professions students with community-based organizations serving marginalized populations across the region. A second-year medical student at Drexel University College of Medicine with a background in emergency nursing, Chris brings both deep compassion and frontline experience to the work of Radical Hospitality.

We sat down with Chris to talk about his experience, the power of stories, and what it means to make space for others.
Can you tell us a little about yourself—where you’re from, what you’re studying, and what brought you to Broad Street Love?
I grew up in New York City but have lived in Philadelphia since arriving for nursing school in 2013. I’m currently studying at Drexel University College of Medicine and thinking about becoming an emergency physician.
What drew you to this internship?
I was drawn here through the Bridging the Gaps program. A dear friend of mine, Marcia, has volunteered at Broad Street Love and encouraged me to seek out experience here. Having worked as an emergency nurse in Philadelphia for the past five years, I understand how important organizations like Broad Street Love are. I wanted to learn more about how they help people and give back to the community.
Has anything surprised you about the work or the community?
I’ve been surprised by the warm atmosphere and camaraderie. Every day, the team comes together to do their best and navigate challenges. While having a mix of staff, volunteers, and interns can be complex, I’ve felt really supported. Sean and Sharif, in particular, have helped me and the other interns feel like part of the community.
What’s one moment that’s really stuck with you from your time here?
There are many. What sticks with me most are the moments of connection—getting to know guests well, listening to their stories. Those interactions have brought comfort to both of us, I think. That feeling of being valued and building trust stands out to me in particular.
What’s next for you after this internship?
I head back to school in a couple of weeks to start my second year of medical school! I hope to come back and volunteer during the school year, though.
What does Radical Hospitality mean to you?
In my own life, even before coming to Broad Street Love, I’ve often said I practice “radical inclusivity.” Growing up, my mom used to say, “the more the merrier.” That idea—that there’s always room at the table, always opportunity and hope, even if it’s not immediate—is really comforting to me.
So, Radical Hospitality means giving without expecting anything in return. It’s respectfully saying, “I don’t know, but let me help you find an answer.” It’s unconditional love.
Help Is Not Hypothetical. It Happens Here.
Chris’s story reminds us that the most meaningful care often begins with listening, presence, and respect.
At Broad Street Love, our guests find more than services—they find dignity, community, and real connection. That work is only possible with your support.
